Volunteer opportunities: A note from the Upper Sugar River Watershed Association

We inherited a grant last year that does invasive species awareness throughout not only the Upper Sugar River Watershed, but a nine-county area of SW Wisconsin. It’s really exciting to be doing work in all these new places, but it does require the support of volunteers. Here are two projects we could use help with in particular:

Bait campaign: Our goal is to expand the number of bait selling shops that we can reach in the Driftless. Willing volunteers would receive a short training and then be supplied with outreach materials and tasked with a quadrant of a Wisconsin county to educate. The process at the shop is to stop into a dealer with materials and ask to speak to a manager. The person explains the importance of preventing the spread of invasives via bait and gives them materials (printed FAQ’s, laminated display reminders, stickers, and pamphlets) to share with their staff and ideally to present near their bait sale area. This will be a good project for spring before the fishing season is in full swing, and we want to contact both dedicated gear and bait shops as well as bait vendors in gas stations, hardware stores and grocery markets. These seasonal locations are often most in need of education!

Clean Boats Clean Waters: Volunteers are trained to conduct a boater education program in their community. Teams educate boaters on how and where invasive species are most likely to hitch a ride into water bodies. Volunteers help perform boat and trailer checks for invasive species at landings, distribute informational brochures, and collect information on boater movement in the region. We are looking for people to help staff a few specific locations in the Driftless. In particular we would like to source folks for Yellowstone Lake, Blackhawk Lake, Lake Wisconsin, and a couple landings on the Mississippi River, although we are open to other landings that resonate with an engaged volunteer.
