Protecting Black Earth Creek

Our Tuesday, April 11, Chapter Meeting
By Topf Wells

SWTU’s has many great allies in that effort and we’ll hear from one at our April membership meeting.

Tony Abate is the Conservation Director for Groundswell Conservancy.  Over the past 22 years Groundswell has protected over 1,200 acres in the Black Earth Creek valley.  SWTU has contributed to a couple of these projects.  Tony will discuss some of those purchases, plans for those lands, and Groundswell’s current and future interest in Black Earth Creek and its watershed.

Tony is one of the great young conservationists with whom we work. I first met Tony when he was working to improve prairies and wildlife habitat at Madison Audubon’s Goose Pond. He continued such work for Groundswell and was recently promoted to direct its land protection program.

When Tony finishes his presentation and answers our questions, you’ll know that Black Earth Creek and many other natural resources in southern Wisconsin have a great friend in Groundswell Conservancy.

We’ll meet on Tuesday, April 11, at Schwoegler’s Bowling on Grand Canyon Drive on Madison’s west side. Dinner and drinks will be available starting at 5:30 and Tony’s presentation will begin a bit after 7. Hope to see you there!
